Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays, The Great Barrier Reef, Heart Reef and also Whitehaven Beach. It is the largest town on the Whitsunday Coast and has a transient population given it's focus on tourism.
Airlie Beach is located approx. 900 kms north of Brisbane. The population is in the vicinity of 10,000 permanent residents. Nearby areas include: Cannonvale, Flametree, Jubilee Pocket, Mandalay, Shute Harbour, The Whitsundays and Woodwark.
The property and unit market in Airlie Beach has been holding steady over the past 12 months. Houses have remained steady at a median selling price of $670,000 for the past 10 months. Units have seen a very small decline in median price from $389,000 in Feb 15 to $360,000 in Jan 16.
There are two main schools located nearby Airlie Beach. Cannonvale State School and Whitsunday Christian College. Located a little further away are Proserpine State High, St Catherine's Catholic School and Proserpine State School.
There are a wide variety of attractions and things to see and do in and around Airlie Beach. Being the gateway to the Whitsundays there are a wide variety of marine operators that will allow you to experience the beauty and wonder of the Great Barrier Reef. The majority of these will operate out of Abell Point Marina. Conway National park is also nearby as is the aptly named Heart Reef. The Lagoon in the heart of Airlie Beach has become a focal point of the area.
Boathaven Beach is a new addition to the area and is part of the new Port of Airlie development. Hill inlet is located at the northern end of Whitehaven beach on Whitsunday Island and The Airlie Creek Track winds slowly up the hill behind Airlie Beach. It is an 850m gravel track that offers a glimpse of some unique and rare flora and fauna like the Whitsunday Bottle Tree.
It is believed that the town was named after the Airlie parish in Scotland. The name was suggested by the chairman of the former Proserpine Shire Council, Robert Shepherd. The town was official named Airlie until 1987 when it became Airlie Beach.
Many forms of shopping facilities can be found in the Airlie Beach area, from specialty and gift shops, food and provision shops, fine clothing boutiques and an assortment of tourist shops.
Shopping facilities are also available close to Airlie Beach, in the neighboring towns of Proserpine and Cannonvale. The Whitsunday shopping center on Shute Harbour road Cannonvale is the areas largest mall style shopping center. This shopping center has many much needed facilities including; specialty shops, a post office, banks, automatic teller machines, sport store, cafes and a Bi-lo supermarket.
Another good place to spend time shopping is at the markets, which are located on the Airlie Beach Esplanade along the beachfront, every Saturday morning.
